Buddha's Smile School - 2009

One of the first contributors to Poems for Peace was Buddha's Smile School in Sarnath, India. Buddha's Smile School provides a free education and a daily warm meal to the poorest of the poor. These "slum children" live in mud huts and makeshift tents on the side of the road. They are they beggars, the mala (necklace) bead-stringers, the children who carry lanterns on their heads during weddings; they are "the untouchables." read more ...

Ladakh - 2008

The Peace Quilt was created by students of classes III, IV, V, VIII and X at Rigjung Public School in Choglamsar, Ladakh, India. Ladakh, sometimes called "Little Tibet," sits some 11,000 feet high in the northern most part of India. Although the prevailing religion is Buddhism, there is also a population of Shiite Muslims. Rigjung Public School educates 310 students including 50 boarders who come from remote villages. Students attend school six days a week and learn Ladakhi, Hindi, Tibetan, and English. Most families live in homes with no running water or indoor plumbing and struggle to pay the 600 rupee ($15) monthly tuition.
